Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Remote Desktop Protocol is a multi-channel protocol that allows a user to connect to a computer running Microsoft Terminal Services-providing a cost-efficient and secure way to access programs and data from a remote setting. The RDP client is built into most versions of Windows and other operating systems such as Linux. RDP is an ideal solution for individuals to access important data from places outside of the main network and where the server and/or computer holding the information resides. Simply using the IP address of the machine to be accessed along with a password gives you a quick connection to information you need.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) Virtual Private Network is a "tunnel network" using a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. A VPN can be contrasted with an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can only be used by one organization. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organization with the same access capabilities, but with lower costs. A VPN works by using the shared public infrastructure while maintaining privacy through security procedures and tunneling protocols such as the Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP). The protocols, by encrypting data at the sending end and decrypting it at the receiving end, send the data through a "tunnel" that cannot be "entered" by data that has not been encrypted. An additional level of security involves not only encrypting the data, but also encrypting the originating and receiving network addresses.
